Implementing Azure Cloud Modernisation Across a Cultural Institution

A leading cultural institution in Sydney is dedicated to applied arts and sciences. It houses one of Australia’s most significant national collections. The organisation operates a complex digital platform supporting visitor experience and collection management. In addition, it supports education programs and corporate operations. Platform services have also evolved across multiple cloud vendors over time.

Challenges

The organisation’s platform services had evolved across multiple cloud vendors, with workloads distributed across AWS and limited integration with the Microsoft 365 estate. Platform identity and operational tooling were not unified across the two cloud environments, requiring internal teams to maintain dual expertise to effectively manage the estate.

Cost optimisation was challenging, with overlapping services, manual scaling, and limited reserved capacity discipline making cross platform cost visibility difficult to maintain. There was also limited alignment with a broader Microsoft first strategy across the institution and sector, constraining future modernisation roadmaps.

Solution

Oreta designed and delivered a migration and modernisation program from AWS to Microsoft Azure. An Azure landing zone aligned to the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework was implemented, with segmented subscriptions and governance and policy controls embedded from the outset.

Workloads were migrated from AWS to Azure using a combination of rehost and refactor approaches based on workload suitability, with AWS resources decommissioned as cutovers were completed. Supporting services were modernised by replacing bespoke AWS components with managed Azure equivalents across storage, identity, and monitoring, reducing operational overhead.

Platform identity, monitoring, and security were integrated with the Microsoft 365 estate, establishing unified operations across the cloud platform and productivity layer.

Outcome

• Workloads successfully migrated from AWS to Microsoft Azure.
• Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework aligned Azure landing zone with governance and segmentation embedded.
• Bespoke AWS components replaced with managed Azure services across storage, identity, and monitoring.
• Platform identity, monitoring, and security unified with the Microsoft 365 estate.
