Solving Legacy System and Security Risks: Greenstone’s Patch Management Overhaul

Greenstone Financial Services (GFS), established in 2007, is dedicated to providing smart and affordable direct insurance solutions tailored to the needs of everyday individuals. Operating across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, GFS uses technology and analytics to design, administer, market, and distribute a broad range of insurance products.

Challenges

GFS was grappling with a number of challenges in managing patching across its IT environment, which included AWS Workspaces, Windows Servers (2016, 2019, 2012R2, 2008R2), workstations, SCCM, and Linux systems. These challenges stemmed from a lack of internal resources—both in terms of personnel and budget—limiting their ability to invest in advanced tools or domain-specific expertise. Technical limitations due to legacy systems and compatibility issues further hindered efficient patching. Manual processes introduced a high risk of errors and operational disruptions, with patching windows causing scheduling conflicts and downtime. Security vulnerabilities were a growing concern, as delays in patching left the environment exposed to threats. Additionally, the absence of a structured risk management framework made it difficult to prioritise and address vulnerabilities effectively. The complexity of the infrastructure, spanning multiple platforms and applications, made consistent patching across the environment even more challenging.

Solution

Oreta’s Managed Services team took over the end-to-end patching responsibilities for GFS, covering SCCM, Windows, Linux servers, and ongoing application patching via Qualys. In January 2024, Oreta upgraded GFS’s SCCM environment from version 2207 to 2303, significantly improving patch and device management capabilities. To further stabilise operations, Oreta remediated disk space issues through automated scripts and optimised SCCM Boundary Group configurations, which had been causing recurring patch download failures. Daily infrastructure health checks were introduced via PowerShell scripts to proactively monitor system status. Oreta also helped resolve long-standing issues related to Task Sequence (Operating System Deployment), which had remained unresolved internally for some time. By embedding automation and applying industry best practices, Oreta delivered a more resilient, secure, and efficient patch management framework for GFS.

Outcome

Oreta’s patch management solution delivered measurable improvements across security, operations, user experience, and cost efficiency for GFS.

  • 98% reduction in security vulnerabilities within 6 months
  • 64% decrease in incidents related to unpatched systems
  • 85% reduction in manual patching tasks through automation
  • 75% drop in user-reported issues, improving user experience
  • Optimised costs and improved compliance with structured patch management

These results reflect the impact of a streamlined and automated patching approach. GFS saw stronger security, fewer incidents, and improved system stability. Automation freed up internal resources, while better reporting and governance ensured compliance and reduced operational costs. Oreta’s solution enabled GFS to operate more securely, efficiently, and confidently.
