Overcoming Infrastructure Decommissioning with a Seamless Migration to Equinix Bare Metal Using SD-WAN and VMware
Costa Group is Australia’s leading horticultural company, known for its commitment to innovation and operational excellence. As a technology-driven organisation, Costa Group relies on a robust IT infrastructure to support its logistics, supply chain, and business operations.

Challenges

Costa Group faced a critical challenge as their virtual infrastructure, hosted on Telstra’s CSX platform, was scheduled for decommissioning in July 2024. To ensure business continuity, they needed a migration strategy that would minimise downtime, mitigate risks, and establish a scalable foundation for future growth.

The challenge extended beyond merely relocating workloads; it involved maintaining the uninterrupted operation of critical business applications. Any disruption could significantly impact logistics, supply chain management, and overall productivity. Additionally, Costa Group required a modern infrastructure that not only replicated the performance of the Telstra CSX platform but also offered improved reliability, security, and scalability to meet their evolving business needs.

Solution

Oreta, a trusted technology partner with deep expertise in IT infrastructure transformation, was engaged to facilitate Costa Group’s migration to Equinix Bare Metal. The project was structured into two key streams: Network & Firewall Migration and Workload Migration. Oreta designed and deployed a new SD-WAN network and firewall infrastructure in Equinix, replacing the legacy CSX network while ensuring continuous connectivity. The workload migration involved assessing Costa Group’s existing environment, developing a VMware architecture on Equinix Bare Metal, and executing the migration of Costa’s virtual machines in controlled stages with extensive pre-migration testing. Oreta optimised the platform for high performance, incorporating redundancy and security measures while facilitating structured knowledge transfer. Strong governance was maintained throughout the project with weekly check-ins, detailed reporting, and close stakeholder collaboration to ensure transparency and alignment with business objectives.

Outcome

  • Zero business disruptions: The migration was successfully completed without impacting operations.
  • Enhanced IT infrastructure: Costa Group now operates on an enterprise-grade VMware-based platform leveraging Equinix Bare Metal, Fortinet Firewall, and SD-WAN solutions.
  • Improved performance and scalability: The new infrastructure provides better reliability, faster processing speeds, and greater flexibility, allowing for future expansion and cloud integration.
  • Operational efficiency: The IT team transitioned seamlessly into the new environment, ensuring continued operational stability.
  • Risk reduction: By modernising their infrastructure, Costa Group minimised risks associated with legacy systems and gained a cost-effective, manageable platform.

Feedback

“An amazing effort from all of you that is greatly appreciated. I don’t think I have seen a cutover of this magnitude go so smoothly. Thank you and well done.”
