Eliminating Latency and Boosting Performance with Mainfreight Local DIA Transformation

Mainfreight Australia, part of the global logistics and supply chain leader Mainfreight Limited, has been operating in the country since 1989. With over 74 branch locations nationwide, the company delivers time-critical freight, warehousing, and international forwarding services across metro and regional areas. Leveraging a high-performing owner-driver fleet, Mainfreight ensures end-to-end logistics coverage, keeping Australian businesses moving efficiently.

Challenges

Mainfreight aimed to phase out costly MPLS circuits across all branches. Their existing setup routed all internet-bound traffic back to the central data centre through MPLS, where it passed through perimeter firewalls. While secure, this design added latency for cloud and internet-based applications, slowed end-user performance, and placed heavy bandwidth strain on MPLS links at the data centre. With cloud adoption growing, the need for faster, more scalable, and cost-efficient architecture became urgent.

Solution

Oreta worked closely with Mainfreight to design a network transformation that supported their MPLS decommissioning strategy while enhancing user experience. The solution introduced Local Direct Internet Access (DIA) at branch level for approved applications like Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Windows Updates, Webex, and key custom apps. This was paired with Cloud On-Ramp for SaaS, enabling intelligent traffic steering to SaaS applications over the most efficient network path, based on real-time performance. To prepare for a complete MPLS phase-out, TC4 links were provided at each site to serve as the future primary connectivity.

Outcome

  • Improved application performance through optimal traffic routing and reduced latency for cloud-based tools.
  • Enhanced end-user experience with faster, more reliable access to critical business applications.
  • Reduced dependency on MPLS by offloading internet-bound traffic locally at branch level.
  • Future-ready network architecture positioned for smooth MPLS decommissioning in upcoming project phases.
